Women’s tennis blanks Kutztown to extend streak

The Bloomsburg University women’s tennis team won in dominating fashion again on Tuesday, this time shutting out Kutztown University 9-0 at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. The Huskies swept all nine matches against the Golden Bears, winning three doubles contests and all six singles bouts.

Tuesday’s win over Kutztown extended the women’s winning streak to six matches and improved their season record to 7-5. With the conference win over Kutztown, the Huskies remain undefeated at 5-0 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division opponents.

Bloomsburg’s first doubles win of the day came quick as the duo of Cassidy Calimer and Isabella Sarquis defeated Kutztown’s Kara Urland and Taylor Capoferri by default in No. 1 slot. At the No. 2 doubles slot, BU’s Giovanna Bonito and Catherine Garrity battled with their opponents from Kutztown before ultimately winning a tight match by a final of 8-6.

With two doubles wins already racked up, Chloe Berridge and Sienna Cerra completed the sweep by defeating KU’s duo of Shadimon Navarro and Mackenzie Delp by a final of 8-2

After locking up wins in all three doubles contests, the Huskies opened up singles play with Calimer taking the court first to face Kutztown’s Capoferri. After falling to Capoferri in the first set 3-6, Calimer battled back to win the next set closely, 6-4. Two sets were not enough to decide a winner, and Calimer would eventually pull ahead of Capoferri in the third set and capture the victory by a 10-4 decision.

BU’s Bonito, who was named PSAC Athlete of the Week last week for her performance in the shutout victories over Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg, took the court next to face Kutztown’s Yasmeen Malik. Bonito carried her momentum from last week into her No. 2 singles match as she was in the driver’s seat the whole time, defeating Malik in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Isabella Sarquis had a similar outcome to Bonito as she carried her success from her doubles appearance into her No. 3 singles match against Kutztown’s Alicia Pursell. Sarquis swept Pursell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. BU’s Berridge had an identical result as she too won her match in straight sets, defeating Mackenzie Delp 6-0, 6-1.

While she did not take part in doubles play, Bloomsburg’s Cassie Wentz saw action at the No. 5 singles spot as she took on Kutztown’s Elyssa Tomczyk. Wentz took care of business, defeating Tomczyk in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. With the win, Wentz extended her singles winning-streak to 11 straight games. Wentz has not lost a singles match since March 10 at Bentley University in Orlando, Fl.

Garrity closed out singles play for Bloomsburg as she shut out Kutztown’s Navarro in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

With just three matches left before the end of the season, the women’s tennis team will look to continue building off their momentum as they will look to make a run in the postseason.
