The Big Event is a single day community service event that is held during the spring and is coming back for its ninth year at Bloom. This event is run entirely by the Community Government Association (CGA). It is the largest community service event that is student run at Bloomsburg University and gives students the opportunity to help out in our town. By registering with a group or organization, it is a great chance to serve local areas together and to gain service hours. This event is open to all students on campus. This year, the event will be held on Saturday, April 7. Registration forms are due in the Community Activities office in KUB by March 27.
Every year there is a huge turnout for this event and last year alone there was about 2,000 students that helped out in the community of Bloomsburg. This year, CGA is expecting another 1,000 students to participate, making a total of 3,000 student volunteers. Each year the number of participants is expected to increase. Volunteers include students from Greek life, sports clubs, and other organizations from our school. Some of the locations that students were sent to help out at were The First Presbyterian Church, Children’s Museum, Kocher Park, and more than 100 residences. The tasks that the student volunteers were asked to do were mainly chores such as gardening, raking up leaves and picking up trash throughout our town. Other clean up tasks would be assigned to volunteers.
The Big Event is a great way to help out our community and give back to the locals. “I think it is important to hold the big event every year at bloom because it helps better our relationship with the town community”, said Olivia Chandler, CGA Treasurer.
