For the past seven years, Commonwealth University has kept tuition rates flat for in-state students, not raising them yearly as many universities often do. Tuition has stayed at $7,716, but as many students know, other expenses such as fees and housing tend to raise the total price of a college education significantly.
Any increase in fees is determined by the Council of Trustees. As well as handling charging and financial matters, they also make decisions concerning student discipline. Additionally, they prepare an annual review of the university president to submit to PASSHE’s Board of Governors.
In 2023, the Board of Trustees approved an increase in housing and dining fees for on-campus students across all three Commonwealth campuses. According to CU President Bashar Hanna, this was because “…our current fees are not keeping pace with inflation”. These rates went into effect during the 2024-2025 academic year.
Until the next Board meeting scheduled for March (DATE), 2025, it is unclear how student fees will change in the next academic year. However, considering the university’s continued financial deficit, students can likely expect an increase in fees in the coming academic years.
(Ideally, if I get a quote from Jessica, this is where it can go.)
