“Abracadabra” by Lady Gaga came out on streaming services on February 3rd, 2025. This song has transported us back into Gaga’s pop era. It is an electronic song that is entirely dance-worthy. She has emerged from her soft, “Die with a Smile” phase and into an edgy, eccentric, and dark atmosphere which is more reminiscent of her previous work. It holds a similar vibe to her 2008 and 2009 albums “The Fame” and “The Fame Monster.” The song itself casts a spell on you; it’s almost intoxicating, like you can’t get enough. It’s entirely electronic with a steady beat and exciting rhythms. Gaga’s chorus, though at first coming off as gibberish (or Italian), is comprised of the word “Abracadabra” with variations using the Latin prefixes “Morta-” and “Amor-,” meaning death and life. Her lyricism surrounds the commonly used theme of “why else live if not for love.” The music video is haunting, using colors of deep reds, blacks, and whites; it captures the essence of the music in an aesthetically pleasing way. “The category is dance or die” opens up the scene and confirms that this song’s purpose is to make you move. The visuals and choreography capture oddities you aren’t used to seeing in our current age of music cinematography. “Abracadabra” is only seven days old and has already snatched Billboard’s #1 spot with 13.7 million U.S. streams. This is only a taste of the new era Gaga is creating; more is to come on March 7th, 2025, with her new album “MAYHEM.”
