During the first week of the 2025 fall semester, Bloomsburg campus was faced with numerous issues regarding the Wi-Fi. On August 25th, the Bloomsburg campus community was informed that the Wi-Fi was down at 10:02 A.M.. It was later restored at 11:21 A.M.. The following day, August 26th, another email was sent informing the campus that the Wi-Fi was down at 10:28 A.M.. The issue did not get fixed until almost 24 hours later, making online resources almost completely inaccessible.
The Wi-Fi has been causing complications since move-in for multiple students, the new register system causing confusion. In previous years, Bloomsburg campus had utilized a campus-specific secure network that only required your university login. To some, the register process has been extensive and complex. This along with the outage has left students feeling frustrated and annoyed. Victoria Burke, a third year student from the Bloomsburg campus mentioned “I’m really upset we pay all this money to go to school here and the Wi-Fi keeps going out.”
The outage led to multiple obstacles for both students and educators. For example, many students were unable to do school work as syllabi and assignments are mainly accessible through Brightspace. This also affected class time throughout the day for online and in-person courses. Classes on Zoom became difficult to join, and in-person multiple resources were not available. Second year Bloomsburg student, Meg Shively claims, “You’re telling me that I’m paying to go here for most of my classes to be online due to the merger and then I can’t even work on said classes because we have no Wi-Fi?”
“If I wanted to go to school online, I would have done it at home where the Wi-Fi works.”
The Voice reached out to Jeff Peterson, the interim CIO of the Information Technology department, as well as Boise Miller, the Executive Director of the Infrastructure Data Center. While there was no response from Peterson, Miller responded stating “We’re still working on the post-incident report.”
While students still worry about whether or not the Wi-Fi will go out, the issues have been taken care of for the foreseeable future.
