The first annual NAACP image awards to be held in April

According to NAACP.org, In 1967, the Hollywood Branch created the NAACP Image Awards.  It has since gained enough notoriety to become a primetime live special broadcasted on networks such as FOX, TVOne and NBC. The NAACP Image Awards is one of the  nation’s premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts, as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.

With the 50th anniversary of the award show looming, the NAACP club of Bloomsburg University looks to host their First Annual Image Award show this semester which is to take place Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 in the Kehr Union ballrooms 1,2 & 3. Doors to open at 6:45 pm and the show to start at 7:00 pm sharp.

The Club looks to honor a number of faculty, students, clubs, and organizations for their tremendous work on campus, in the community, and in specific fields of interest. There will also be performances by a few campus groups and student acts. The NAACP Club hopes to bring together different clubs and organizations to celebrate what has been a progressive academic year. “We want to publicly shine a light on students and faculty who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make this campus a much more inclusive and comfortable environment for all” said Dorron Hunt, former treasurer of the club. This will be the first event that the club has decided to host annually.

The idea for an award show came to fruition during an executive board meeting when the members were trying to figure out a way to honor the late Dr. Walter T. Howard who was the first faculty advisor of the group before passing in May of 2015. The group came up with naming a scholarship award  and  faculty award for outstanding service after the late advisor. Although they  came up with the award the group was still stuck with the task of creating an event in which they can honor the recipients of the award. So what started as a way to honor one member of the campus community turned into a celebration of the year’s accolades.

So far the club has commitments from various groups across campus such as Vice Versa, Beats by Bloom , Student Poetry Association and special guest performers from the student body. “You can expect red carpet, photographers, vlog host , the whole nine yards and that’s just the pre- show” said Emmanuel Sterlin, assistant treasurer. The club hopes to rival the Grammys, Emmys , MTV Awards, BET Awards, Country Music Awards, and Kids choice Awards although on a much smaller scale . The idea is to have an event that the student body and campus community can look forward to attending on a yearly basis.

With the show being a little more than a month away the club is still putting the final touches on the show and are looking for any interested performers or acts to participate in the entertainment portion of the show. The group is also accepting nominations for faculty members to be awarded the nights most prestigious award,
