An artist’s perspective on the NFL: Since taking over NFL uniforms in 2012, Nike has taken many chances. Are they good ones?

When most people think of sports, they only notice stats, plays, coaches, and athletes, but that’s only the surface. The colors, logos, and uniforms are some of the other ways sports fans remember teams, whether they realize it or not. Over the past five years, a number of NFL teams have redesigned their uniforms: The Vikings, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Browns, and Lions.
Vikings

In 2013, the Minnesota Vikings, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Miami Dolphins redesigned their uni’s. The Vikings joined the NFL in 1961 and have changed uniforms, but their strong purple continued throughout history. For the 2013 season, the new Nike uniform line debuted with a brighter tint of gold to make the purple pop. In addition, the numbers on the uniform were changed to a serif font to reflect the “bow of a Viking ship,” as the official site for the Vikings explains. The home uniform is purple with white numbers, with two stripes, white and gold, and the plants are the opposite of the jersey; white with two stripes, purple and gold. The away uniform is white with purple numbers, with two stripes, purple and gold, and just like the home uniform, the pants are the opposite, purple, with two stripes, white and gold. Pairing purple and gold together is always a win because gold is a tint of yellow, which is the primary compliment to the secondary color, purple.
Jaguars

Jacksonville gained their football team in 1995 so the team hasn’t gone through many uniform changes, but in April 2013, the team adapted a new uniform line by Nike. The new home jersey is black with white numbers, outlined by teal and gold, and the road jersey is while with teal numbers, outlined by black and gold. On each uniform, there is a gold or black geometric, boomerang shape on either side of the neck, and a complementary cuff on the sleeves, either teal or black depending on the uniform. The uniform also included a new and improved helmet with a color gradient, from glossy gold to matte black,.This is a first of its kind in the NFL. Their colors go great together, even though they aren’t primary colors; they are modified tertiary colors. Teal is a mixture of blue and green with a tint, and gold is a mixture of yellow and orange with a slight tint as well. Teal and gold are two colors in tertiary triad, and in that triad, teal is the dominate color so accents of gold separate teal from a background color.
Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise started in 1976, and they are only on their 3rd version of their uniform. In March 2014, their newest uniform was unveiled, the home uniform is red with sharp, geometric, white numbers, with black shoulders, and the pants are white. For the away uniform, it is white with sharp, geometric, red letters, with black shoulders, and the pants are black. Throughout the uniform, small red, black, and orange accents are added in to create a stronger shape. While black is a shade, not a color on the color wheel, it is still a main color used in uniforms. Placing it next to a strong, primary color like red, there is a guarantee pop against any background colors.
Browns

The Cleveland Browns were originally formed in 1944, and kept their traditional colors: brown, orange, and white. For the latest uniform, which unveiled in 2015, the home uniform jersey is brown, with sharp red numbers, with a white shadow, and three stripes on the shoulder: orange, white, and orange again. The pants are white, with three stripes on the side: brown, orange, and again, brown. For the away uniform, the jersey is white, with orange numbers, with a brown shadow, and three stripes on the shoulder: brown, orange, and brown. The pants are orange, with three stripes: brown, white, and brown. In a way, brown and orange are the same color, just different hues, orange is the original color on the color wheel, and brown is a shade of orange. The colors for these uniforms are much different than the other team’s colors, it’s not complementary, they are analogous; colors sharing a common color. Theses colors work because of how smooth the difference between them are.
Lions

The Detroit Lions were formed in 1932, and other than a brief moment of maroon, the colors have always been blue and silver, and as of this year, black was officially removed as an official color. The removal of black was the only large difference made about the uniforms, the home uniforms are Honolulu blue with silver numbers, and silver pants with three blue stripes on the side. The away uniform is the opposite, white with blue numbers, and blue pants with three silver stripes. Silver and white help accent and pop the blue to make it clear for all to see.
