Ryan Shiffer of the Bloomsburg baseball team earned Husky of the Week honors, and was named PSAC East Baseball Athlete of the Week for his impressive offensive performances against Mansfield, Clarion and Lock Haven. The sophomore catcher went 16-of-30 at the plate for an average of .533 with four home runs, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored. Shiffer lead the team last week in all four of those offensive categories, as well as on-base percentage (.576) and slugging percentage (1.033). Shiffer is currently batting .339 on the season with five home runs and 31 RBI, getting a hit in 12 of his last 14 games.
All five of Shiffer’s home runs have come in the last 18 games and he had not hit a home run in the first 52 games of his career at BU. BU’s baseball team is currently 20-16-1 on the season and just one game above .500 in PSAC play after their latest 14-6 victory over Slippery Rock. Shiffer will look to continue his offensive production when the Huskies travel to West Chester on April 21 for a double header against the Golden Rams.
In addition to Shiffer, BU softball’s Taylor Parker also earned Husky of the Week honors for her dominance on the mound. The senior pitcher went undefeated in three starts last week against Millersville, Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion. Against Millersville, Parker threw a complete game and allowed just two hits while striking out 10 batters. In that same game she also went 4-for-4 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored in the 3-0 win for BU.
In her game against Pitt-Johnstown, Parker struck out the first seven batters of the game consecutively, and totaled 14 strike outs on the day. BU won that contest by a score of 8-0. Then against Clarion, Parker dominated again as she retired nine batters for another 8-0 BU win. Parker is 10-5 on the season and was named the PSAC Central Division Pitcher of the Week. The BU softball team is currently 21-13 overall and 11-1 in PSAC play with just 10 games left in the season.
