The start of a new semester is an exciting, and intimidating, time for all. Recently, Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg welcomed the class of 2028 into their new home for the next nine months. Move-in is a nerve-wracking experience for most, but CU-Bloomsburg provided ways to calm their nerves. Students in jumpstart, learning communities, and the honors college moved in a day or two earlier than the rest.
Anyone in these student-run organizations had a full schedule of different activities a week before classes began. Some students wished they had more time to settle into their new living space, while others enjoyed being busy all week. Freshman Brooke Calkins enjoyed her events with the nursing learning community and the busy schedule, saying “The first week was perfect because the events allowed us to get acclimated to life on campus”. These on-campus communities also allow students to meet new people and create friendships. Students not in the learning communities, honors college, etc. were given a choice to attend husky days.
The students that attended Husky Days were underwhelmed and ended up leaving after lunch. Whether or not you participated in these events, most students moved in the same way. A move-in time and date was presented to the incoming freshmen in their email, and when they arrived on campus, they were met with excited and helpful HOWLS. The HOWLS made sure everything ran smoothly, doing things such as unloading the car for you, moving bins into your room, and emptying the bins in your room.
Parents and students were asked to move their cars to the hospital parking lot to make room for students still coming in. The only issue with moving cars is if you moved in at nine and your roommate moved in at ten, there was not a lot of time to be alone before they came. My advice to any student moving into a dorm would be, to stay organized, limit the number of helpers you bring, and enjoy the experience! You only get one freshman move in so make the most of it.
