Audio Club is a club that focuses on teaching students how to record, use audio and recording equipment and the art of music production in general. They frequently record music for small bands as well as experiment with what goes into capturing live audio versus studio productions. The Audio Club invites local bands to come in and play their music in the studio, and the club will record them. Then they mix that audio, master it, and possibly release it if they so choose.
Thomas Chandler, a senior music technology major and the club’s president, states, “we try to put a lot of emphasis on how it will be when you get hired at a studio and how it will be when you get hired at a live venue.” The main purpose of the club, according to Chandler, is “to create some confident and successful audio engineers.”
While anyone can join the club, Chandler suggests that the club is mainly geared towards people who have an interest in music production, whether it be on the musical or technical side. He states, “as long as you are interested in one of them, you can be an asset and be incorporated and have [a] want to be there.”
Club meetings are every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the band room (room 167) in the Haas Center, and there is a variety in what the club works on during the meeting. Many meetings involve the club setting up a five or six-piece band in the band room, composed of any members who want to be involved, whether through singing or playing an instrument. Then, those interested more in the technology side of things would use the audio equipment available to them to record that band playing a song. Other times, meetings include doing recordings of soloists and experimenting with that type of audio. Also, the club recently spent a meeting going to the Audio Engineering Society Convention in New York.
Chandler believes students will leave club meetings with a sense of comradery, as this club helps students rely on others and learn to work together on a project, as they will have to do in their jobs post-graduation. Austin Hendrickson, a sophomore music technology major, added, “I feel like this club gives students that have that creative want an outlet.” He goes on to say that this club allows students to produce music and learn about music production, if they are interested in that, without having to commit to a music production minor or major.
Looking to the future, Chandler hopes the music scene can be bigger on campus. He expressed that music used to be a large part of the campus and that Bloomsburg used to be well-regarded for its music and music production. So, he believes this club is helping to revive that scene on campus and return Bloomsburg to where it used to be.
The Audio Club is open to work with and record any students or bands on campus who would like their music to be recorded.
