When thousands of Bloomsburg University students trade their textbooks for work gloves each spring, they’re participating in more than just a volunteer day – they’re taking part in what has become one of the university’s most defining traditions: The Big Event.
Now in its 16th year at Bloomsburg University, The Big Event has grown from a modest service initiative into the largest student-run community service project in the university’s history. Last year alone, over 1,000 student volunteers completed multiple service projects throughout the greater Bloomsburg area.
The impact of this massive day of service extends far beyond the immediate help provided to local residents and organizations. The initiative has fundamentally shaped the relationship between the university and the town of Bloomsburg, breaking down stereotypes that sometimes exist between college students and permanent residents.
The event’s success relies heavily on student leadership. A team of dedicated student coordinators works year-round to organize projects, recruit volunteers, and manage logistics. For many, this leadership experience provides invaluable real-world project management skills that complement their academic studies.
Projects range from property maintenance for elderly residents to beautification efforts in public spaces. Local organizations like the Columbia County Historical Society have become regular project sites, creating lasting partnerships between the university and community institutions. The local food bank sees tremendous benefits each year, with Big Event volunteers accomplishing in one day what could take weeks to complete.
Looking ahead, student leaders are planning for this spring’s event, scheduled for April 5th. For more information or to register as a volunteer, QR codes will be posted around campus, or interested participants can contact the student activities office directly.
