The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties union called a no-confidence vote for Feb. 11-12 against Commonwealth University President Dr. Bashar Hanna. The vote follows the increasingly tense relations between faculty and administrators, growing financial instability and declining academic programs. Not to mention the new play in the CU playbook- closing branch campuses.
A vote of no-confidence is a vote that is meant to show that the majority of a group does not support the policy, leader or governing body in charge.
APSCUF President Dr. Kennet Mash encourages faculty, staff and coaches to take advantage of this opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns.
“…if there is going to be change faculty, students, coaches, and staff will need to speak up. I’m proud of the faculty and coaches who are leading the way, and I think this is an educational moment for all involved,” said Mash in a comment to The Voice.
The vote of no-confidence is anticipated by many in the community to be the start of a new season, one of open dialogue and communication between the governing powers that be and the very individuals who are impacted by each change. Dr. Eric Hawrelak, Bloomsburg’s APSCUF chapter president, understands that the vote’s success is contingent on the university’s Board of Trustees actually hearing the message being sent their way.
“A vote of no confidence is a very public representation of the faculty’s frustration with the current administration, particularly President Hanna’s leadership. APSCUF hopes that the Commonwealth Council of Trustees takes this vote seriously,” Hawrelak.
