What happened:
The McCormick Building is almost finished and is on its way to be open for the Fall 2025 semester. The renovations are finished and according to Asa Kelley, the Video Production Specialist and Technical Advisor for WHSK states “furniture installation is happening now.”
Why it matters:
The McCormick building, also known as the McCormick Center for Human Services, houses classes and spaces for the following groups:
- College of Education and Human Studies
- Communication Studies
- Multimedia Services
- McDowell Institute
- Media and Journalism
- Nursing
- Psychology
- Social Work
- Sociology and Criminal Justice
- Teaching and Learning
- WHSK Radio
With the building reopening after its extensive renovations, these groups will not only have a proper learning environment, but updated equipment to further enhance the education within the fields listed above.
The Background:
The McCormick building has been closed for renovations since 2023. Around early April 2025, the fence around the building was officially removed. The Voice got to see a preview of what’s to come, and how progress is moving. The man in charge of the project, Edwin Gunshore, stated that the building should be close to finished with furnishing before finals week. The first floor focuses on communication and media and journalism type studies. There will be a brand-new radio station, a new TV studio and updated control rooms. The second floor has new education based classrooms, a zoom room and a podcast room. Then the third floor has incredibly realistic operation rooms and labs, and even a fake hospital wing for nursing students. Each floor also has a set of offices for all members of the departments, which will move them out of their relocations. Kelley also claims “We’re still waiting for the occupancy permit which must be issued by the PA department of Labor and Industry in Harrisburg. That should be the last step in the process.” The new building will allow for an extensive education to all students who want to further their knowledge in human services.
