What happened:
There have been numerous speculations as to what is happening with many of the buildings on campus. The rumors have circulated around Old Science, Mount Olympus Apartments (MOA), The Waller Administration and Montour Hall.
The Voice reported in March 2024 “The Waller Administration building and Old Science Hall are scheduled to be demolished following the completion of the McCormick renovation. Waller will become a parking lot with a receiving dock and Old Science will become a green space.” The Voice continued to explain that this is due to how old the buildings are.
CU staff response:
Stacy Wagner, the Chief Facilities and Safety Officer, stated that the plan has remained to demolish Old Science building and the Waller Administration building, and not any other space at the moment. When asked why these two buildings, Wagner states “Both Waller and Old Science would cost more to renovate than to tear down and build new. The layouts and infrastructure of these buildings pose renovation challenges.”
There are currently no plans to construct new buildings at these sites. However, the Old Science building will be turned into a residence life quad. The Waller Administration building will be converted into a temporary gravel parking lot and will then be considered as a potential site for a new academic building.
Students have mixed feelings about The Waller Administration building in specific.
Student response:
Zach Ridall, a sophomore commuter student states, “I think that the demolition of buildings no longer in use would be great from the perspective of a commuter, I often feel overlooked by the school,” he continues to say “I have to worry about parking an incessant amount. There’s no parking for commuters in central campus, so extending the lot into Waller would be very helpful.” On the contrary, Madi Van Gordon, a junior student residing in Soltz says “I don’t think they really need to tear something like that down, sure parking might be a slight problem, but I don’t think they’s really need to do something that drastic. The Waller building has been here for a while, it just looks like a part of campus. It would suck to tear it down.”
There are no current timeline as to when these demolitions and conversions will take place, however there are plans in the works.
