In a statement released on Monday, Bloomsburg University announced that they will begin “immediate reforms” for Greek Life in order to protect student safety.

According to the statement released by the university, “the reforms are aimed at curbing dangerous drinking, hazing, sexual assault, and other negative behaviors and consequences found in the Greek Life system around the country.”

The announcement additionally states that effective immediately, reforms of zero tolerance for hazing, risk management policy development, recruitment, new member process, chapter operations, chapter scholarship will be implemented, along with a new fraternity/sorority scorecard system to keep track of any violations or issues that occur within Greek Life.

All fraternities and sororities are now under an 18-month probation period as these changes are implemented.

BU President Bashar Hanna is quoted in the university’s statement as saying: “Today, Bloomsburg University is taking important steps to strengthen fraternity and sorority life on campus and protect the safety and well-being of our student-members so that their experiences can be cherished and admired…As a community, we have put a stake in the ground with respect to our values and standards for the benefit of our fraternity and sorority communities, and most importantly, for the safety of all our students.”
