Steph’s Subs Short Staff Affects Business

Carly Busfield, Howl Editor

Steph’s Subs is a beloved local eatery that many residents of Bloomsburg visit frequently. Yet, this wonderful establishment is lacking the staff to keep it running much longer. Many small businesses have fallen under due to the lack of staffing, especially the food service industry. It is saddening to see such wonderful small businesses being affected so immensely by the lack of workers.

Faye Moosbrugger, a senior Early Childhood Education major, is one of the few employees of Steph’s Subs. Her current position is a cashier and sandwich maker.  She shares a love for her job with her fellow coworkers and wishes more could join the team to share the same sense of family.

Steph’s Subs is owned and operated by Stephanie Severn herself. Severn lives right in Bloomsburg and is a very active member of the community. Where is Steph’s Subs located? It is located at 150 E Main St, Bloomsburg, PA 17815. What are their hours? The store is open from 10am-7pm due to the lack of staff. Former hours were originally 10am-9pm. The eatery manages to stay open for their rush hours of lunch and dinner.

Faye shared, “We struggle to stay open for our normal hours due to lack of staff. We are all working 4-5 days a week while in school, so we are unable to be open at our normal hours. We cannot work the entire day every day and are having a hard time managing the workload between the rushes. We are only able to have 3 people in the store at a time.” Steph’s Subs has around 10-15 employees as of right now who all live their own busy lives. They are currently hiring for the Cashier/Sandwich Making position which is very manageable and easy when properly staffed.

One of the best parts of Steph’s Subs is the weekly specials. A little over a year ago, the establishment had a different special for each day of the week. The options were either a half a hoagie or other sandwich, a bag of chips, and a fountain drink for a great price! The specials have changed over time with the business, but Stephanie tries her best to offer what specials she can.

The eatery is very active on their Facebook page where they post news on future events, specials, and much more.

For example, the deal announced on Monday, August 25th was “Congratulations! You’ve made it to Thursday! Why not treat yourself to our specials?! 1/2 Ham & Cheese, small chips and medium drink for 6.00(+tax) & Homemade Cream of Potato Soup for $4.00(+tax).”

Overall, Severn truly puts heart into her business each and every day along with her beloved staff. Steph’s Subs is always there to serve the community and now it is time for the community to give back to this establishment.

Steph’s Subs will also be holding their own stand at the Bloomsburg Fair. Check them out and find more on their Facebook.
