Meet The Voice: Connor McKay: Sports Editor

Our staff spotlight now shines on the other half of the Sports section, Connor McKay.

Connor was born and raised in the town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He graduated from  Trinity High School in Camp Hill in 2016. He has always been into sports, and was a track runner and part of the three year undefeated division championship swimming team.

Connor came to Bloomsburg University in the fall of 2016; it was the only college he ever visited because he knew from his first visit junior year that this is the place he wanted to spend his college years. He entered with a major in Mass Communications and has since narrowed that down to a specialty in the public relations track. Staying true to his passion in high school, Connor quickly found himself enveloped in the university’s English program. With the advice of a close professor, he picked up an English minor by the end of his freshman year.

After graduation at BU, he has yet to plan out what he wants to do. He is very interested in working for a public relations agency or working for a smaller local non-profit cause. The allure of journalism still remains and he has not ruled out the possibly of becoming a reporter.

It was during his second semester of sophomore year that Connor found his way onto the Voice staff. He had just taken a news writing class that he had thoroughly enjoyed and was in an editing class when, at the recommendation from his professor, got an email from the current sports editor and decided to check it out. Starting as a contributing writer, he quickly moved from staff writer to editor by the end the semester.

During his time at BU, he has found himself in a variety of clubs and activities. He is a member of the English Honors society Sigma Tau Delta and is on the Mass Communications advisory council to help with the majors curriculum. With a motto of “work as hard as you play.” With this is mind, he  has made the Dean’s List every semester since he started school as well as, going out to the quad every Friday if weather permits, for a game of ultimate frisbee.

When he’s not on campus for class or clubs, there are quite a few places you might find Connor. He tries to spend as much time longboarding as he can and enjoys the company of his friends and roommates. A frequent fan of the night life on campus, his weekends are very exciting as he enjoys making each weekend a new adventure at college.

While enjoying the responsibilities of schoolwork, friends, and work, Connor’s real passion is music. He has been to a number of music festivals including Firefly, Dreamscape, and Big Dub. As a self proclaimed “raver”, his favorite artists include Getter, Borgore, and Knife Party.

If Connor could give any advice to readers, it would be to be yourself. Spending time worrying about what friends, family, or colleagues think about you is time wasted you could be doing what makes you happy.

It’s not always easy, but following your own path and living for yourself is the only way you are ever going to have a fulfilling life.  Never let anyone sell you short of success even yourself.

“Live it up, try new things, meet new people because you never know where your personal odyssey is going to take you,” he says. “You may even be taking my job after I’m gone.”
