The Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team stood strong in the closing minutes to defeat Chestnut Hill College by a final score of 70-58 on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 1-1 overall while Chestnut Hill falls to 1-3 to start the 2019-20 season.
Senior guard Bella Ricci led the way for the Huskies after recording 23 points along with three rebounds and three assists. Ricci drained five of her ten attempted three pointers which all came at a much needed time for the Huskies in the road victory.
Junior forward Megan Brandt chipped in 15 points of her own along with four rebounds.
Bloomsburg managed to take a 34-25 lead into the half after 10 points from Ricci alone in the second quarter of play.
The Griffins then came out into the secnd half firing as Chestnut Hill managed to outscore the Huskies by a 24-14 margin in the third quarter, making it a 49-48 game headining into the final frame.
The Griffins’ Lauren Cim notched 10 points after going a perfect 6-6 from the field in the third quarter with two made three pointers. Cassie Sebold added eight points of her own in the third quarter of play to make it just a one point basketball game.
The Huskies stood strong in the fourth quarter after another seven points from Ricci and seven points from guard Payton Spadduccino, along with holding Chestnut Hill to just nine points in the final quarter of play.
The Griffins did manage to force 23 Bloomsburg turnovers in the loss along with holding the Huskies to just two points on the fast break.
Other players on the stat sheet for the Huskies include junior guard Emma Saxton, who poured in six points and grabbed five rebounds in the win. Spadduccino went on to finish the game with the much-needed seven points she gave the Huskies in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The Huskies will hit the road this weekend to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. Bloomsburg will travel to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) on Saturday before turning around and heading to Seton Hill University on Sunday.
BU will not return home until this coming Tuesday, Nov. 26 when the Huskies welcome Holy Family University to the Nelson Field House.
Both games this weekend on the road are set to start at 1 p.m. prior to both of the men’s games.
