Meet Novalea!
As of fall 2024, the new editor-in-chief of The Voice is Novalea Verno, a junior from York, PA. She is a double major in political science and media and journalism and a double minor in technical writing and legal studies. As editor-in-chief, Verno’s responsibilities include working with staff members and aiding them as they write articles, running weekly meetings, working with the advertising and business manager and coordinating with the university and community.
“I essentially have my hands in every area of our newspaper,” Verno explains.
Verno began working for the Voice in her freshman year of college and has worked her way up from contributor to staff writer to news editor to editor-in-chief. She decided to join the Voice because of her passion for student media, which she developed in her high school career when she was a journalist, and then co-editor in chief, for her school’s two newspapers.
“I knew going into college that I was going to get involved in a paper. [I] did not know that I was going to be editor-in-chief, I was just happy to be a part of it, but I really love The Voice so its been fun.”
The Voice and Beyond
Verno’s favorite part of the Voice is the people on staff.
“We have… such a fun crowd that are so… eager to get involved and I really think that that’s what this organization consists most of, is… very involved people.”
She goes on to say that the staff are very knowledgeable about what is happening on and off campus, which makes them interesting to work with and talk to.
In the upcoming year as editor-in-chief of the paper, Verno is looking forward to helping her team write interesting, timely and well-crafted stories for the Bloomsburg community while building their portfolios.
She states, “I think my biggest goal is really just finding our strive in reporting. We have a lot… of bigger series coming up that we want to do well with. We want to produce good journalism.”
When discussing her future, Verno expresses that she has a passion for journalism, politics and educating readers on the political system. Following her graduation in 2026, she aspires to be a political reporter for either state or local government, hopefully in Harrisburg.
Meet Caleb!
The new managing editor of The Voice is Caleb Brown, a senior from Nesquehoning, PA. Brown is a media and journalism major with a history minor who has been a part of The Voice since his sophomore year, making this his third and final year with organization. Within his job as managing editor, Brown works with Verno and the section editors to assign stories to staff writers, produce and design each page of the paper and ensuring the website is up to date.
Brown is also a very active member of the radio club on campus, WHSK. He originally began his college career working at the radio station freshman year and then joined The Voice the following year. When asked about this, he responded that he didn’t want to overwhelm himself his freshman year by being too involved in clubs, thus the wait until sophomore year to write for The Voice.
Brown’s favorite thing about The Voice is that it has something for everyone to enjoy and find interesting.
He states, “I think it’s important for students, especially now that [we’re] Commonwealth, that they get to hear their voice heard and get informed about whats going on that they might not know about.”
Looking Ahead
Brown’s goal for this semester is to start off strong in every aspect.
“I really want people to pick up The Voice and [be] like ‘man, they are killing it this year.”
He specifically has high hopes for the news division and wants to ensure The Voice is producing stories that people are curious about.
Upon his graduation in May, Brown hopes to be working as a news director at a radio station.
He shares, “I feel like I am in a good position to muscle my way in between mediums, so if I want to work for a newspaper or radio, but a goal of mine would be hopefully to find something that combines both.”
But What is The Voice?
When both editors were asked to describe The Voice, Verno states “we are an extension of the student body and we are here to ask the hard questions and you know get the answers that our students are looking for.” Brown describes it as, “your news, your campus, your voice…We strive to put out news that is going to benefit students, that is going to keep students involved.”
In the words of Caleb Brown, “The Voice, coming out every Wednesday- read it!”
