BloomU bus policies have students stressed out

Students relying on Bloomsburg University buses as transportation are struggling to accommodate a limited number of drivers and an ambiguous schedule.

BU drivers will often drop students off and drive away without picking others up in order to take a break. Students have expressed that they wish these break times for the Downtown and Honeysuckle bus drivers were posted in the same area as the pickup and dropoff times to provide more clarity.

The Department of Facilities Management is in charge of scheduling the number of buses making trips and when they stop. The bus for downtown comes every thirteenth and forty-third minute of every hour, whereas the Honeysuckle bus makes its rounds roughly every fifteen minutes.

According to the Assistant Director of Facilities, Kent Witchey, they staggered the bus drivers’ breaks as to keep constant coverage for transportation to and from campus. “We run one bus to Honeysuckle and either one or two downtown as needed,” he says.

Marco Spinosa, a BU student who lives off campus, expressed frustration with the times the buses arrive; according to Spinosa, the downtown bus doesn’t arrive when it’s supposed to. “God forbid I miss [the bus] and [am] forced to walk to class and risk being late… It has to make more frequent stops,” he says.

Expressing similar concerns, BU student Reid Skiro commented that he “will never understand the bus schedule” after being told by a downtown bus driver that he’d have to wait a few minutes to be picked up.

Concerns over the ambiguity surrounding BU buses will become more prevalent in the upcoming months as students rely on them to get to campus in winter weather.

“I’ll definitely be taking the bus more this winter because there’s no way my car will make it to campus in the snow,” said BU student Jill Dillinger, emphasizing how bad the roads can get for people who live off campus and can’t always rely on their own vehicles.
