BU student death ruled suicide
October 30, 2019
A Bloomsburg University Digital Forensics major died early Tuesday morning “from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to the Columbia County Coroner.
Michael Somerville, 21, of Bloomsburg was “pronounced dead at the scene” of his home at 3:46 a.m., according to a press release from the office of Columbia County Coroner Jeremy Reese.
Reese “has ruled the Manner of Death as Suicide.”
Somerville was the son of former Vice President of Student Affairs Dione Somerville.
Dyan Murphy, a teacher from Bloomsburg Area High School who knew Somerville well, says that he “was a student that could always put a smile on [her] face.”
“Michael was always a student I knew I could pick on and he’d pick right back. He had an awesome sense of humor; his laugh was infectious,” she said. “I am still in shock that this young man is no longer with us.”
Eric Traupman, a Bloomsburg native who attended high school with Somerville, similarly says that he “was always telling jokes and being lighthearted.”
“[He] seemed like the happiest guy,” Traupman said.
BU President Bashar Hanna asked that the Bloomsburg community joined him [in keeping the Somerville family, as well as Michael’s friends and classmates” in their “thoughts and prayers” in an email on Wednesday.

I am in agreement. After speaking with my niece who currently attends this college, there appears to be a lack of transparency on campus. What are they hiding? Why was Dione Somerville escorted from campus? There apparently was a sense of urgency to remove her from campus. Could this have contributed to her son’s suicide? What is going with the sexual assaults? One just happened this past weekend? Additionally, there appears to be a huge incidence of racial intimidation. Just recently a post has circulated campus with a white student intimating selling “nigg**s”. WHAT IS GOING ON? The school is being stifling quiet. This is unacceptable. These issues must be addressed, otherwise they continue to fester and contribute to distrust of the administration. I understand the extreme hazing, brutalization of students coupled with reckless behavior and no accountability was the contributing factor to “shutting” down greek life….. More answers and responsiveness is warranted!

Something is very wrong. What is happening at Bloomsburg? First, Mike Somerville’s mother is escorted out of her work place in the middle of October. Then, this young man allegedly kills himself? Perhaps the journalists should stop concentrating on distracting events outside of Bloomsburg and fully concentrate on the plethora of news happening on Campus. It’s good they report events, but what-ever happened to finding out WHY they happened? Bloomsburg lacks TRANSPARENCY. Which breads rumors. Start with the sexual harassment issues/allegations plaguing Bashar Hanna. Then let’s get REAL about why Greek Life was shut down.
I get it. No one who goes to the school wants to rock the boat for fear of retaliation. However, with all the concern over rapes and sexual misconduct going on among students, perhaps…perhaps you should start at the top. Look at the authority figures running the school.
