McDowell Institute minds students’ mental health

The McDowell Institute, in partnership with the Healthy Husky organization, is hosting their annual Mental Health Awareness Day fair on Thursday, Oct. 18. The event will take place on the quad from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (the rain location is the Student Services Center). The purpose of this event is to spread awareness about mental health and to highlight the resources available to Bloomsburg University students to promote social, emotional, and behavioral wellness. Some of the activities will include an interactive butterfly tent, positivity rock painting, meditation and yoga, a Reasons to Live photo booth, Smash a Burden, Trash Your Insecurities and much more. During the event, you will earn one stamp at each table or activity that will be added to your complimentary stamp card. When you have filled your stamp card you may drop it off at the McDowell Institute table where you will be entered in a drawing to win special prizes. Drawings will take place every half hour and you do not need to be present to receive your prize if your name is drawn.

In addition to being able to attend these activities for fun, students may also use this event as an opportunity to provide voluntary community service If you are interested in volunteering for this event as an individual simply log into HuskySync, go to the McDowell Institute page, and fill out a volunteer application. Volunteering may include setting up, running a booth or activity and tearing down after the event. Although the activities on the quad wrap up at 3 p.m., you are also encouraged to attend a presentation that same evening by Minding Your Mind. It will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in KUB 230.

The presentation is free to attend and open to the Bloomsburg University campus community. The speaker will share her personal experiences in the hopes of reducing stigma about mental health and to raise awareness at Bloomsburg University. For the fourth year in a row, Minding Your Mind seeks to provide mental health education to adolescents, teens, young adults, parents, teachers and administrators. We hope to see you at any and all Mental Health Awareness Day events!
