The Council of Trustees will be considering Interim President Jeffrey Osgood as the internal candidate for Commonwealth University’s presidency.
On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the university trustees have voted to open a presidential search process for CU. John Wetzel, Chair of the CU Council of Trustees, said during the session “I’m going to make a motion to that end. . . the we proceed with a single candidate search, with Jeff Osgood as the proposed candidate.”
The trustees then sent out an email at 4:15 p.m. to students, faculty and staff, explaining that they will be in partnership with the Office of the Chancellor to form a search committee. The search committee will evaluate whether or not a single candidate should be presented to the PASSHE Board of Governors.
The email then describes the process of the presidential search, which includes:
- Establishing a search committee
- An evaluation of candidate materials
- Interviews with multiple constituencies (faculty, staff, students and alumni from each campus)
- The formal recommendation phase
The goal is to conclude their evaluation on the internal candidate so there will be consideration on the subject at the State System Board of Governors meeting on Feb, 12.. The email then says, “If the Trustees or the Board decide to not advance or appoint the internal candidate, the university will immediately move into a national presidential search in the spring.”
The Voice will continue reporting on this as updates progress.

In my opinion they should do a national search to ensure that the best candidate is selected. PASSHE has had several presidential searches that included qualified internal candidates that end up not being selected once the pool of candidates are review. Let the hiring process be followed and may the best candidate be selected. If Jeff is the right person, he will rise to the top of the list.
