If you’re walking past the Bloomsburg Town Hall, then you’d notice that the flag pole has a new addition. The town of Bloomsburg officially has its own flag, designed by Bloomsburg University sophomore, Ayden Pointer.
Ayden’s motivation to create a flag for the town began when he was in his 10th grade English class. While he was searching the web, he noticed many major cities and towns in the country had their own unifying symbol. This inspired him to create one for Bloomsburg– something to bring the town and university together.
“It was 2 years that I worked on it, asking for input from people who lived in the area and in town and what they would like to see on it when I came to the final design.”
The final design reflects the Bloomsburg community and the surrounding land. Ayden shared the key elements of the flag.
“The Susquehanna River is represented by the blue wave along the bottom, representing the river at the south edge of town. The red represents the people of the town. Red is the color of the high school, the school district, red is also the color of the university.”
Although Ayden was not born a resident of Bloomsburg– originally from Pittsburgh and later moved to Scott Township when he was 14– he expressed his love for the town and the family ties he has to the area.
“My grandparents are connected here. My grandma taught at the elementary, middle school and high school. And my grandfather was a professor at Bloomsburg University where he was chair of the chemistry department.”
In terms of how he spends his time in Bloomsburg, Ayden shared that he is studying political science and French and is politically active in the area. He is currently on the ballot to be elected for Columbia County Democratic Committee and is president of the Bloomsburg University Democrats. When asked about his final comments, the only thing Ayden had to say was, “I love Bloomsburg.”
